What is a UTI:

Urinary Tract Infections (UTI’s) most commonly affect the bladder, and kidneys.

Symptoms may include:

  • Pain or burning with urination
  • The need to urinate often, and/or suddenly
  • Blood in the urine
  • Urinating in small amounts

Symptoms of a kidney infection, may include the above symptoms as well as, fever, back pain, nausea or vomiting.

What to do if you think you have a UTI:

See a medical provider for an evaluation and a urine test.

Treatment for UTI:

  • Antibiotics treatment may be prescribed for 3-7 days
  • Increase fluid intake
  • Avoid bladder irritants such as: alcohol, carbonated drinks, caffeine, spicy foods
  • Avoid sexual activity
  • Azo or Uristat (OTC remedy to help numb the discomfort) if recommended by your health care provider
  • Ibuprofen for discomfort

How to prevent a UTI

  • Increase fluid intake
  • Do not hold urine in for long periods of time; urinate on a regular basis
  • Urinate before and after sexual activity
  • For females, wipe from front to back
