THE CHALLENGE:

The Healthy Husky Challenge is designed to familiarize you with  UConn’s Student Health Services. Student Health Services is comprised of three offices, Student Health, Counseling & Mental Health and Wellness & Prevention.

Start to become an advocate of your own health by participating in this challenge. Learning to take advantage of heath resources will be important to ensure your well-being during your college career at UConn and beyond.

The activities in the challenge can be utilized by all UConn students.  

Healthy Husky Mascot StickerHow to Participate:  

Visit 3 different activities listed on the Healthy Husky Challenge Card to receive a sticker.

When you collect 3 stickers drop off your completed Healthy Husky Challenge card to the front desk at Student Health Services.

REWARDS:

Every student who submits their completed card will receive a T-shirt, a Wellness Kit and is entered in a raffle for one of ten $10 Amazon gift cards. For students who complete one activity from SHS, CMHS and WPS will be entered in the grand prize raffle for a $100 Amazon gift card!!

 

The challenge will begin on September 14, 2017 at the Health Fair, located on Fairfield Way.

The deadline to submit your completed Healthy Husky Challenge card is November 17, 2017 before Thanksgiving Break. Please drop it off at the front desk of SHS, located at 234 Glenbrook Road.

 

*If you lose your HHC brochure or card, you can pick up a new one at the info desk at SHS.

Located at Fairfield Way, near the Homer Babbidge Library

The University of Connecticut Student Health and Wellness Fair has been established to provide UConn students with resources to achieve optimal Health and Wellness. This will be accomplished by providing health risk awareness information, promoting the wellness resources available to students and creating an environment that supports pro- health practices. Organizations on the UConn campus and the surrounding area actively participate in sponsoring educational and interactive exhibits or booths addressing a health and wellness issue pertinent to their department or specialty.

Nutrition Appointments

How do I make an appointment?

  • All appointments are free!
  • There are currently 4 Registered Dietitians at Student Health Services.
  • Call the appointment desk at 860-486-2719 to make your initial or follow-up appointment.
  • A dietitian is available between 9am – 5pm, Monday – Friday and some days at 8am.

What can I expect at my initial appointment:

  • The initial appointment is 45-60 minutes and follow-ups are 20-30 minutes.
  • A registered dietitian will structure the appointment around your needs and goals. The dietitian will first gather information about you, your medical history, your nutrition history and your current food intake. This information will allow the dietitian to determine your nutrient needs and will work with you to individualize a plan to help you to meet your goals.
  • To better prepare for the appointment and help us analyze your current eating habits, please complete and turn in this 3-day food record.doc (instructions included) prior to your appointment. Please use this portion size guide.pdf to help you estimate your portions. Food records should be submitted by e-mail to Nutrition Counseling. By filling out and submitting this record prior to your appointment, time will be saved during the appointment and be better spent on helping you achieve your goals. In addition, the dietitian will have also had time to analyze your 3 day food record and provide you with a detailed assessment of your food intake. Even submitting a one day food record will be beneficial in the event that you do not have 3 or more days before your appointment.

What does the PAC do?

The Physical Activity Counselor (PAC) is a trained professional who provides advice and guidance in health and fitness and related areas. Regardless of present fitness level or experience, the PAC can offer assistance in beginning a new exercise program or provide guidance to improve an existing routine.

What are the appointments like?

All appointments are FREE! This includes the initial appointment as well as all follow-up appointments.

  • Duration: 30 minutes
  • Location: Student Health Services (3rd floor, Room 304/308)
  • Dress: Normal, everyday clothing
  • Purpose:  Health risk assessment and pre-participation screening.  Review of pertinent past medical and exercise history.  Review of personal concerns, needs, limitations, and goals
  • Preparation: Please complete the following forms and bring them with you to this initial appointment:

Suicide Prevention Week Keynote Speaker

This year's Suicide Prevention Week will be from September 23 - September 29.

September 27, 2017 at 7 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. in the Jorgensen Center.

This event is free and open to the public. No tickets required for entry.

Yoga

Yoga classes emphasize mindful awareness and self-compassion. Each class includes a brief overview of yogic philosophy/techniques, a centering and/or body scan, yogic breathing, postures, and final relaxation.  All skill levels welcome, no prior yoga experience needed.  Equipment provided, just come dressed comfortably!

Classes will run from 8/30/17 – 12/7/17 in Arjona Rm 403

  • Wednesdays 1:30-2:30
  • Thursdays 11:00-12:00 and 12:15-1:15

 

*No registration required!  Classes are free!  Students, faculty and staff all welcome.

Late Night Events

Every Friday and Saturday night the Student Union hosts Late Night Events from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Wellness and Prevention will be hosting 3 Late Night Events this year:

             Friday, October 6th: Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) Late Night - Eat Drink and Play (Cupcakes and a Game)

             Friday, October 13th: Health Ed Late Night - Rainbow (Smoothies and Safer Sex)

            Friday, November 3rd: Health Ed Late night - Couch Potato (Smoothies and Safer Sex)

Alcohol Screening

Wellness and Prevention offers an Alcohol Screening for all students on Wednesday, October 25 from 10am to 3pm

Located at Wilson Hall in room 125

The Relaxation Station – 10 minutes

Students can stop by anytime the office is open and utilize our free Relaxation Station year round. The Relaxation Station provides Shiatsu massage chairs, full body massage chairs, and plush pillows for a quiet place to relax. The Relaxation Station also has books about “not stressing the small stuff” and some books on humor. We encourage students to utilize this free resource!

Time-Out-Tuesdays and Pet Therapy – 10 minutes

Time-Out-Tuesdays are fun events held by Health Education every Tuesday. For dates and times check out Calendar of Events.

Health Education also hosts Pet Therapy every other week in the Relaxation Station. Students can come in to hang out with therapy dogs and sit in the Relaxation Station.

Hang out with pets for 10 minutes or attend one of the calendar events and receive your sticker!
